A sleepless princess, a mysterious stranger in snow-white robes and, thirty years later, a meeting between two women in London. As we begin unravelling the puzzle, we learn the story of Naranbhai, a small-time African Indian landlord who likes to think "big-big" -- big house, big business schemes, two wives and a mad daughter even as his heart pulls towards his beautiful new tenant. A series of disasters, personal and professional, egg him on to aim even higher, leading to his final downfall which coincides with the Expulsion of all Indians from Uganda. Bombay Gardens is Jameela Siddiqi's second novel. Her first novel, The Feast of the Nine Virgins, was a literary and critical success.
