The perfect political candidate would result from the unholy union of Elmer Fudd and Jeffrey Dahmer - a cute sociopath who never gives up. A person who everyone can like, though they don't know why, and who can single-mindedly pursue a goal without regard to the destruction around him. Sprinkle a little money on top - and what could possibly go wrong? So if life is going so damn well, why is it that nobody seems content? "Don’t turn into one of those soft-brained, single-issue nitwits who overvalue the influence of money and seem to mistake longevity for qualification." Evan has a good job, good friends, and very little to worry about. In fact, none of the people who live in the village have much to worry about, really. When was it then, that the impulse to shake the tree became so pervasive? Was it really a sense of social responsibility? Was there really a debt owed to those who had no voice? Aren’t they the same as those who don’t care enough to speak up? Jesus, even the cops feel the same way. There is nothing worse than a redneck with a lot of money. Local elections are swayed in favor of those with influence and city council seats are bequeathed rather than won. If the same families continue to run the city, nothing will ever change. They will continue their dirty deals, continue their habits of steering city money toward private ventures, continue in the name of progress, while becoming fat at the public trough. Evan and Jim have too much at stake to take overt risks or public position on the proposals for new real estate development, it is too hard to pluck the projects that will really hurt from the ones that they really need. What they need is a champion, what they need is someone who cares enough to step up. . . or someone who really doesn’t care what anyone thinks- that might work just as well. A humorous and honest peek into the real lives and relationships of modern men, "Boiled Frogs with Mock Toast" is about taking the time to notice what is going on in the face of the overwhelming boredom of responsible living. It is the story of what happens when we squeeze leadership from reluctant friends, and create expectations where they never existed. It is the story of those who care, and of those who don’t care if you do.
