The story takes place in the early nineteen eighties in Montana. Drugs were just coming into the State in quantity. The legal drinking age was still eighteen. Montana has always been behind the nationwide trends. It is a coming of age book about fourteen kids who go to University of Montana in Missoula. The two main characters are from the little town of High Pockets. Ethan goes from high school to Missoula. Cindy goes back east where her mother and aunt attended college. They had become lovers the summer after high school. She drops Ethan soon after finding a new life on the east coast. Cindy gets into drugs and is asked to leave the eastern college quietly and no charges would be filed for her selling dope. She goes to Missoula with her friend Joany. A dozen more young people become involved in the story as well as many adults. The balance of the book details the next three years in college. There are failed relationships and lost goals for some of the kids. Others turn out much different in the end from what one would think. There is drugs, sex and murder involved. The sex is lurid but tastefully written. Irony and gotcha without knowing it plays a large part. Everything ties up neatly in the end with some surprises and happiness.
