The definitive account of the search and finding of the tomb of pharaoh Tutankhamen. This book has not been conceived for the shelf of the academic, neither is it an everyman’s guide to Egyptology. Rather is it the story told in human terms of the premature death of a young boy-king who was confined to his eternal resting place over three thousand years ago, only to be disturbed in his tranquil sleep by a small, but resolute, band of English archaeologists thirsting for new insight into the cradle of western civilisation. Of these latter, each were individuals motivated from differing walks of life, but all intent on contributing to the sum total of historic record. Each was prey to his own peculiarity of character and it is the interplay of these personalities to the extraordinary circumstances of the time that add drama and unbridled excitement to this unique ‘dig’ at Luxor. That the story has become interlaced with a legend of the effect of the supernatural upon the lives of some of these men is a matter of public record. How much credence can be placed on these sometimes bizarre, if uncanny events, must rest with the reader. The author would only like to add that he has based the story on considerable first-hand evidence, but has also drawn widely on other published and unpublished material. This he gratefully acknowledges.
