In this picaresque novel, Brom returns from distant Moongoth at his father’s passing, to reign over their people as clan-king. However, some of the kinsmen question their late clan-king’s wisdom in sending Brom away to learn warcraft and statecraft in civilized lands, and fear he has become soft. Brom feels he must prove that he is fit to rule his people, living with the knowledge that his worldly teachings have changed him, filling him with doubts of his own—yet he does not wish to fail the expectations of his deceased father. With the shaman Oktuun at his side to guide him, young Brom engages in courageous undertakings and learns by the personal tolls extracted what it truly means to rule a savage people.
