The Arriflex 16SR-1 or 16SR-2 16mm motion picture cameras are some of the the most widely used cameras ever made, and continue to find new uses and markets worldwide. An entire after-market industry has emerged, modifying the original cameras to Super16, and retrofitting PL mounts, on-board speed controls and newer video taps. This guide was born a long time ago when I was fortunate to be one of the first on the block to have an Arriflex 16SR Motion Picture Camera, whichI called my own but really belonged to the bank. Should I fall behind in my monthly payments, the value of the equipment would be determined by its wear-and-tear, which I hoped to minimize with a simple and selfish camera catechism: DON'T ... BECAUSE. It began as a few Xerox copies intended for camera assistants. As exposure to the camera increased, so did the number of pages that colleagues contributed. As with any camera system, there are a number of ways to get the job done. It just turns out that certain procedures are faster, easier or gentler. Some of the information here is basic to the use of any camera, and certainly,it isn't the only definitive way to work. Consider it a set of shortcuts, suggestions and recommended procedures to be used as a jumping off point, provided to you by many professionals who have worked with the ARRI 16SR both on location and in the studio.
