In 1794, the 17 year old James Augustus Grant left his Highland home at the manse of Abernethy in Strathspey, en route for India. At the age of 20 he was appointed Private Secretary to the Governor of Bombay and five years later, Chief Secretary of the Government of that Presidency. The last of the fifteen years served in the Honourable East India Company, he spent as a judge in the newly annexed territory of Gujerat. He had many experiences to share with his aged parents on his return to the Manse in 1810.
