Stephanie Saxon Wilson travels to the planet Ixixil with her new baby girl, Amanda, for trade and business activities. Amanda, among the first children to be raised in the anti-gravity air car age, interacts with Eagle One, playing games with it, and learns to read and speak Selat, the language of Florez. Just as the family seems to be leading a quiet life, all that changes in a horrific afternoon, with an attempted kidnapping of both Amanda and her new brother, Brian, the precursor to an uprising in the western states by a group bent on separating itself from the United States. President Cynthia MacKenzie calls on Stevie and her air car to assist in putting down the rebellion, and Stevie immediately supports her when others would not. After leading a counterattack, she and a small unit are dispatched to free former President Jacob Meyers, resulting in serious injuries and many casualties. Undeterred, Stevie remains close to the President, before returning home to receive first aid and recuperate. With the uprising put down, Stevie is surprised by a missile attack on her home in the middle of the night, following which the President orders her off planet, and sends her to Valdebaron. There Stevie finds an island for a home of her own, meets representatives of the planet Ixixil, and enjoys a pleasant interlude away from Earth. Amanda continues to grow, despite some envy and hostility from classmates, and in fact thrives on the attention and lessons from Eagle One, soon performing complex orbital mathematics. A second kidnapping, successful at first, of Amanda’s little sister, Alyssa, is thwarted by Eagle One and Amanda herself. After that, life passes quietly for the family, until Stevie and Eagle One are once again called on to deal with a new and unexpected incursion, the discovery of a strange starship, called the Space Nomad, silent, but hostile if approached too closely. Her own starship is lost in a brief fight with the nomad, and Stevie initiates the search and rescue mission for the crew. She visits Ixixil again, in gratitude for their assistance, though it is she who receives honors. Amanda flies Eagle One on her 12th birthday, but two years later, in the midst of puberty, the teenager disobeys orders, kicks it, and leaves to go off with a boy, who attempts to assault her. Rescued by Eagle One, she is grounded, but soon atones for her actions. While visiting colleges, she meets a student at Syracuse, Ricky Morgan, and impresses a professor at Stanford. After graduation, she and Ricky help in the evacuation caused by a volcanic eruption in the Caribbean, which severely burns Ricky. Later they marry, and a daughter Ilene, is born. Stevie receives bad news from the planet Ganahgote, and visits there, where she and Eagle One are attacked, with destructive effects when they fight back. Ilene marries, and a daughter is born. Lorelei becomes Eagle One’s favorite, much as her grandmother did when young.
