An estimated 17.6 million U.S. adults are alcoholics or alcohol abusers, according to the National Institutes of Health. A fine line exists between full blown alcoholism and problem drinking. Alcoholism has traditionally been defined as an incurable disease while drinking to excess - though problematic - has been viewed as considerably less dire. “Alcohol Dependence: Redefining Alcoholism and Recovery in the New Millennium” closely examines the similarities and differences between alcoholism and alcohol abuse. Both conditions now fall under the umbrella term “alcoholic use disorder” (AUD.) Several alcohol-use related studies along with information on the federal government’s recent decision to refine “recovery” are also included in this text.Only the most credible medical experts including the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, Federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Mayo Clinic, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and American Association for Clinical Chemistry were referenced when compiling “Alcohol Dependence: Redefining Alcoholism and Recovery in the New Millennium.”
