Adventures Of Pirates and Sea-Rovers (English Edition) [Kindle-editie]

This book, part of Harper’s Adventure Series, gives a wonderful view into the life of the seaman/adventurer/pirate from the time of Queen Elizabeth I and the Spanish Armada to Colonial America. While originally written for boys, the tales will give enjoyment to adults as well. Some of the stories are at least part fiction and others are written as histories with the information on hand at the time of compilation (1908).Several authors, some of whom had first-hand knowledge of living and working on the high seas, contributed to this book.Howard Pyle (1853-1911) was a well respected American born author and illustrator. Vincent Van Gough, a contemporary, said of Pyle’s work that it "...struck me dumb with admiration". The cover picture is Buccaneer of the Caribbean by Howard Pyle, 1905, from his Book of Pirates.Captain Howard Patterson (1856-1916) was the author of Patterson's Illustrated Nautical Encyclopedia (1901) and The Yachtsman's Guide (1887). He was a Superintendent of the State University of New York Maritime College.S. G. W. (Samuel Green Wheeler) Benjamin (1837-1914) was an American author, diplomat, and amateur sailor. He was appointed as the first American minister to Persia.Rear-Admiral John H. Upshur (1823-1917) served in the U. S. Navy during the war with Mexico and the American Civil War.Owen Hall (1853-1907) was the pen name of Irish born author and playwright James Davis.Reginald Gourlay was a poet and author. His works include The Necklace of Pandura (1907), and The Fiercest Beast of Prey (1895).Language warning: some of the terms, especially in reference to non-Caucasian people, while common at the time of writing, would be considered politically incorrect now. This eBook edition was carefully prepared by referring to an original text to correct scanning errors that are common in other versions. There comes skimming out from behind the fringed headland a lean, low pinnace full of half-naked cutthroats—white, black, and yellow. It swoops down upon the derelict galleon like the kestrel upon the wild goose, and presently the hollow, flaming space of sky and sea is filled with the uproar and tumult of battle—the rattle of musket-shots, the cracks of firelocks and pistols, the detonation of cannon, yells, shrieks, jeers, and curses. Clouds of pungent gunpowder smoke drift down the breeze, dissolving in the hot and reeking air, and under the cloud a crew of pirates swarm headlong over the rail and upon the deck of the galleon and finish what they have begun. Afterwards the silence of the completed work.So those treasures of gold and silver and pearls and plate were gathered in by Spain, and snatched from her again by the old buccaneers who sailed the Spanish Main.A lonely island; a long strip of coral sand with combing breakers bursting upon it; a shining mass of treasure poured out upon a sail-cloth spread upon a beach; a circle of hungry-eyed, wolfish, unshaven, partly clad figures gathered about in the sunlight; the pirate chief standing over the booty—counting, adding, subtracting, parcelling. So the treasure was divided.
