Conwell (1843-1925) was an American minister, orator, philanthropist, and writer. Born in Massachusetts to farmers, Conwell attended Yale University and enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War. He attained the rank of Colonel, and converted to Christianity (from atheism) during the war. After studying law, Conwell became a Baptist minister and successful writer. The profits earned from ACRES OF DIAMONDS were used to establish Temple University.
