“Abandonment of Thought (An Anthology of Instinct)” consists of short stories and experimental pieces. These range from literary fiction to psychotic horror. Specific room has been set aside for joint creativity between author and reader. Philosophical essay rounds out the remainder. The first tale is told in the unique voice of “Fred.” Fred’s observations take place through the filter of his eyes and are colored by the opinion of his will. Fred’s “will” overcomes the strident voices of men who believe that life’s position is bestowed and not earned. The tale takes place in postmodern times but Fred’s voice is from the ancient past. One story is written by two people; yet it is only one story. A romantic makes the rounds of Europe while a D-list professor makes out his asinine lesson plans. A twisted allusion brings the two stories to a titillating singular conclusion. There are comparative issues of Kierkegaard with Regina, Heidegger with Dasien, Nietzsche with St. Paul, Ayn Rand with herself (of course), and Husserl with his misty horizons. Yet I leave Jorge Luis Borges with his allusions, echoes and reflections to the better judgment of the reader. The voices of two people, author and reader, are blended. Time and logic are bent into unrecognizable dimensions. Who came first; the author or the reader? The author is dependent upon the reader’s knowledge. What mysteries occur to books as they set on the shelf? Do they age like the mental abilities (or failings) of humans? Do the words fall to the bottom of the page and become jumbled or do they rearrange themselves with a new clarity? Hopefully the reader and author of this tale lend some insight to these questions.
