A Ton of Bricks is a novel about Grant Saginaw’s dream of concluding thirty years in Congress with worldwide ski vacation and enough frequent flyer miles and hotel points to continue living the high life of a senator. He figured out the perfect plan to implement his retirement bonus – he ran for president. The plan was perfect except for one minor detail…he got elected.Over the years, Congress has worked hard to vote themselves government provided lifestyles where Americans serve them rather than the way it should be. President Saginaw enjoyed that lifestyle and feels it’s his duty to preserve it for future generations of elected officials. The problem is, after decades of doling out a little more each year to get elected, he feels government largess could be at a tipping point. He wants to roll back spending to where Americans can serve Congress without the threat of revolt. Initially, Congress gets onboard, but then they decide others can deal with the problem later.Saginaw and his chief of staff become familiar with the nuances of the founding document. To do Congress’s work for them, they find the constitution actually permits them to establish a new form of government. The American people, of course, would never go for that…but, they never have to know.
