Most noted for his fictional stories featuring the detective Sherlock Holmes, generally considered the most popular character of crime fiction, Arthur Conan Doyle introduced the "consulting detective" and Dr. John Watson, his friend and chronicler, in "A Study in Scarlet," a story he wrote in 1886 and that was published the following year in "Beeton’s Christmas Annual 1887." In book form, the novel was first published by Ward, Lock & Co. in 1888. The first American edition was published by J. B. Lippincott Co. in 1890. The first edition with illustrated by Charles Doyle, Arthur Conan Doyle’s father. A second edition, in 1889, was illustrated by George Hutchinson. Well-known illustrators of other editions include Richard Gutschmidt and David Henry (D.H.) Friston. Illustrations by all these artists are included in this eBook.
