For a young Teach for America graduate, Joe Savino has landed the perfect job – or so he thinks. The Latin School of Washington, D.C. is a public charter school with a classical curriculum and a social mission and which has, after just one year, generated the city’s highest test scores. The school’s founder, R.J. Peterson, is larger-than-life – blue Jaguar, expensive suits, bold ideas – but controversial. Savino idolizes Peterson – that is, until he and his colleagues realize their paychecks are being withheld. As Peterson’s behavior becomes increasingly erratic, Savino begins to realize that the man he is working for -- manipulative, megalomaniacal, completely untrustworthy -- is not who he thought he was. Then, with teachers threatening to quit and parents threatening to pull their kids, Savino faces a choice: keep his head down and hope the school survives, or speak out publicly and risk Peterson’s retaliation.
