The shadow in my story is perhaps an angel or just a guardian making sure that no real harm befalls the main character, a young woman who is an artist and has, throughout time, always been protected by the shadow. In the story, Eleanor, a young woman in the present time is told by her grandmother that she is special and that there have been others in the history of the family who have had the same gifts, the gifts of drawing and painting and of strange dreams. Eleanor is intrigued and goes to try to find proof of her grandmothers’ story. She knows that, as she sleeps, she does have vivid dreams about the past history of the ancient city of Lancaster, in the North West of England, and that often, when she wakens, she is scratched and sometimes muddied.Always there is the smell of lavender, and in an old drawing book that her grandmother gives her, there is a sketch of a man, a fascinating man that by the clothes he is wearing, might have lived about two hundred years ago. She is thinking about him as she is walking in Lancaster, and does not see the car that is speeding by the castle.
