This piece of writing falls between the short story and travel writing but is presented here as a short story largely because it depicts the warm love between Lawrence and his wife Frieda (Anita in the story) as they begin their life of travel together. The story lifts itself away from being just a description of a walk in the rain in the mountains as Lawrence contemplates the rustic pictures they come across in the chapel and recognises the humanity which pours out of the crude representations of the peasant community where they end their journey.
