Essington/Gurz’ “Under A Broken Street Lamp” Chronicle Middle-Class Hardships Having grown up during the early years of the Los Angeles punk rock scene, Michael Essington began to chronicle its recent history by writing about the scene’s key players and major shows for the internationally popular Mike Check column of the website Strange Reaction (www.strangereaction.com). Now he has collected his best stories from the past half-decade, as well as a few new ones written exclusively for his debut book, LAST ONE TO DIE. In addition to appearing on the website Strange Reaction (www.strangereaction.com), the Mike Check column has been seen in the pages of Flipside 2010, as well as in Spark Plug Magazine (www.sparkplugmagazine.com). Essington’s no-nonsense writing style reflects the music world that he knows, and his book details the modern post-punk era, a time when punk is stretching in new ways to express unique views on today’s politics and evolving social movements. David Gurz is the author of Subterranean Emerald City Blues and You're Going to Die Out There, He also edits a 'zine, Usual Suspect, and keeps a weblog you can find at sunburnscold.com. He currently lives next to Lake Erie.
