Cairo, 1901. Egypt is under British occupation and the European quarter is a playground of the rich. Lord Mark Trevelyan is a rogue and confirmed bachelor who lives in the luxurious Shepheard's Hotel and makes ends meet by selling bogus Egyptian antiquities. Lady Laura Blackstone is a London society woman who has come to Cairo to escape the unwanted notoriety thrust upon her by her recent divorce, and finds herself attracted to the crooked Trevelyan even though she knows she shouldn't be. Trevelyan is in his element when a wild American beauty decides she wishes to add him to her list of conquests, but he also finds himself confused by the sustained affection he feels for Laura. And when Laura receives anonymous threats that elevate into attacks, Trevelyan is in his violent element dealing with her enemies, who may well come to regret their choice of victim . . .
