There are quite a few books out there that tell you which mistakes in English are most common. From my experience, these books contain few problematic words and phrases that foreign learners of English really need and use, because they mostly cover the mistakes made by native English speakers. The present book, however, is a compilation of mistakes that are widespread among non-native English speakers because they frequently occur in such vital domains of human interaction as business correspondence, information technologies, small talk and others. I have been collecting the mistakes non-native speakers of English make while working at several multinational companies for about six years. All of the errors dealt with in this book have been carefully selected as being made on a regular basis by a large number of people. Therefore, reading this book will be of great help to all whose first language is not English. The ideal target audience for the book is a non-native speaker of English, whose level of the language is pre-intermediate to upper intermediate, and who proactively uses English on a daily basis for communicating with various English speakers both in written form and orally. Using this book will give you a unique opportunity to cut the list of possible mistakes you may make to a minimum. Most of the entries in this book are meant for your daily use. One of further advantages of this book is that you can use it as a reference all the time as your command of English progresses. For example, beginners may find it useful to learn to differentiate between ‘next’ and ‘following’, while all those who consider themselves advanced may be curious to know when to use ‘Canada has’ and when ‘Canada have’. The entries in this book are grouped into several chapters: Pronunciation Punctuation Words Phrases Clauses and sentences Grammar of verbs: tenses, gerund, voices, participles, modes Style Fun Quiz As you can see, the simpler chapters for beginners, Pronunciation and Punctuation, are followed by the chapters for intermediate learners of English, such as Words and Phrases, whereas the Style and Quiz chapters will probably be more appealing to advanced learners of English. The entries in each chapter are ordered alphabetically.
