The advent of mass bombing raids and rocket attacks on population centers during World War II resulted in the death of tens of thousands of women and children But nothing was as devastating in European history as the British firebombing of German cities. The British said this was retaliation for Germany's conventional bombing of English population centers. The firebombing destruction of Heilbronn on December 4, 1944, left a lasting remembrance as the "Heilbronner Stimme" prints the pictures and accounts of the devastation every year. It took nine days before the city cooled enough for people to go in an collect the charred bodies. After the destruction, Heilbronn survivors kept their faith in God. They began to rebuild Heilbronn into a modern city. With this backdrop, an American soldier met his Fräulein at a May carnival. The two walked hand in hand and began the road to falling in love and marriage even though neither could speak the each others language. After marriage the couple traveled central Europe.
