In order to pay rent, recently fired Haywood Bailey accepts an apprentice position from famed monster hunter Dr. Zane Mallory. But as Haywood soon discovers, the good doctor is virtually unknown in the realm of humans, but well respected in the underworld of prolific vampire authors on an everlasting book tour to keep from getting a real career, lycanthropes with drinking problems, demons who want to retire into possession, pantomime horse tour guides, and even Satan. In his crusade to to help Mallory and his band of rogues keep humanity safe, he must suspend his disbelief in the supernatural, conquer his fear of the opposite sex, and most of all, not get too hung up on logic. If he can do all of this, along with learn to discern advice from his talking cat, Haywood just might get a paycheck. DR. MALLORY AND THE RAINBOW-COLOURED CAT HEAD shows us that the old adage, "open mouth, insert foot" doesn't just apply to mere mortals, and that there really isn't all that much to fear from the netherworld, as long as you can point out the absurd in all things.
