Back to Honor: A Reggie Reynolds Romantic Mystery (English Edition) [Kindle-editie]

Reggie Reynolds, a reporter in Baltimore, returns to her hometown of Honor, Alabama when her baby brother is murdered. She left town years ago under a scandalous cloud and the idea of returning is something she dreads. But her brother has been killed and the police aren’t giving her the answers she needs, so she returns to town. The gorgeous but tortured chief of police, Phillip Robb, heads the investigation and will stop at nothing to keep Reggie out of it. But she is forced into it, especially when the police are drawing conclusions that make no sense and especially when activists in town want to use her brother's death as a way to bring down Robb and what they perceive to be his racist and corrupt police department. And they want Reggie to help with the knock-down. The problem, however, is that Reggie and Robb have a history, a very rocky history that led to a one-night stand both of them had no intentions of revisiting. But as soon as they see each other again they realize that their feelings for each other are still overpowering, and still highly complicated, and still unable to be suppressed, although everybody around them would like nothing better than to keep them apart. Robb makes every attempt to protect Reggie from the horrors of the truth behind her brother’s death, even as he fights for his professional life against accusations that seek to forever cripple him. Reggie feels the heat from her community, too, as she fights to make sense of what is going on around her. Although the evidence sometimes may seem overwhelming, she refuses to believe that the man she loves could harbor the kind of hatred, could do the kind of things Phillip Robb is being accused of doing. Her love for Robb, however, will be tested time and time again as she seeks to uncover the truth he is trying so desperately to shield from her. But Reggie’s investigation leads her to believe that her brother’s death has everything to do with money and power and nothing to do with a drug deal gone wrong, as the police would have her believe. Not only does she discover that the power elites are behind this bait and switch, this sleight of hand, but that Robb himself seems to be leading the cover-up. What she doesn’t understand is why.EXCERPT:But he was too late. Gaffney was pushing Wilcox against the wall when Reggie entered the interrogation room. And the chain reaction that her entrance unleashed was deafening: Detective Finch jumped from his back wall perch and started yelling what was she doing in there. Gaffney turned away from Wilcox and started screaming for her to get out and get out now. Reggie was yelling that she had a right to be there, that she had to see for herself the man who murdered her brother. Charlie Red Wilcox was yelling that they had the wrong dude, that he would never do anything like that to Mike Reynolds. Jimmy Glenn raced in yelling that Reggie knew better than to barge in on an interrogation. And Robb . . . His breath caught the moment Reggie entered his orbit again. He was still in the adjacent room, still staring at the interrogation through the one-way mirror, when his world tilted. It had been so long, so many years, that just seeing her again took his breath away. Everybody were screaming, but the voices were clogging up into gibberish, because Robb couldn’t take his eyes off of her. He stared at her, at her smooth, deep-toned brown skin, her long, thick, wavy hair, her big brown eyes the color of grain. Her hair was loose, hanging down her back in waves of black glory, and even in her feistiness, as she matched Gaffney yell for yell, as she stood toe to toe with his toughest cop, there was no human being on the face of this earth who could have looked more radiant, nor more vulnerable, to Robb. His heart hammered against his chest.
