The great Roman general, Mark Antony created a blazing trail of glory across the whole of Italy and its annexed territories in the late Republican era. His renowned courage and awesome reputation as a gritty do-or-die cavalry leader in his earlier years were second to none. He eventually rose to the dizzying heights of consul – the most powerful civic position that the cursus honorum path had to offer in Rome, through a quirky twist of fate. But his volatile nature was such that it risked tarnishing all his heroic achievements and providing insidious ammunition for his enemies.
